The Credential That Doesn’t Expire

There's a conversation happening right now in almost every industry about what AI is going to replace. Honestly, it's a fair conversation. Jobs that used to represent a clear path to a middle-class life — software development, data analysis, technical writing — are being reshaped faster than most people expected. That's real, and it matters.

But there's a category of work AI isn't touching anytime soon. The kind that requires a human being with trained hands, sound judgment, and the ability to make critical decisions in a physical environment where mistakes have consequences. Aviation maintenance is at the top of that list.

An airframe and powerplant certificate — the FAA credential at the center of aviation maintenance training — is a lifetime certificate. It doesn't expire. It doesn't get downgraded when the market shifts or when a new technology arrives. Once a student earns it, they carry it for the rest of their working life. That credential permanently changes their earning potential. Not temporarily. Not conditionally. Permanently.

That's not a small thing. That's a profound thing.

The demand for qualified aviation mechanics is not a future projection. It's a current reality. Airlines, MRO facilities, general aviation operations, and defense contractors are competing for technicians right now. Starting wages for A&P mechanics have climbed steadily, and experienced technicians regularly earn six figures. Without a four-year degree. Without the debt that comes with a four-year degree. With a credential they earned in two years at a community college.

I want to sit with that for a moment, because I think it gets said too quickly and not felt deeply enough.

A student who never imagined working on aircraft — who maybe never thought of themselves as someone with a technical career path at all — can walk into an aviation maintenance program at a California community college, complete the program, pass their FAA exams, and step into a career that will provide for them and their family for decades. The debt they carry coming out is a fraction of what a four-year institution would cost. The credential they hold is recognized anywhere in the country. The career they enter is stable, skilled, and genuinely AI-proof for the foreseeable future.

That is what community colleges are supposed to do. That is the mission, lived out in one of the most concrete ways I can imagine.

I also want to be honest about something, because I think it gets glossed over too often in conversations about workforce programs.

These programs are hard to run. They don't fit neatly into a standard course outline report. The scheduling is messy. They operate in short-term and non-traditional formats. They require meal breaks built into instructional days. They require varying schedules that don't map cleanly onto a semester calendar. They are difficult to staff because qualified A&P instructors come from wide and varied industry backgrounds, and finding people who are both credentialed and available to teach is genuinely challenging.

The ripple effect touches every corner of the institution. Admissions has to navigate non-standard enrollment timelines. Purchasing has to move on materials and equipment that don't fit typical procurement cycles. HR has to work through instructor qualifications that look nothing like a standard faculty hire. Facilities has to support a program that lives in a hangar or a shop, not a classroom. Every department carries a piece of the load.

And yet.

It is absolutely, unambiguously worth it. Every extra step. Every workaround. Every conversation about why this program needs to be handled differently than the standard process allows. Worth it.

This is why the community college system exists. Not to offer only the programs that are easy to schedule and cheap to run. To serve the students who need something real — something that meets them where they are and takes them somewhere they couldn't get to otherwise. These programs consume more resources, require more coordination, and demand more from everyone involved than most courses a college offers. That's true. It's also beside the point.

At the end of the day, a student walks out with a credential that lasts a lifetime and a career that was waiting for them. That's the whole thing. That's why all of this work is worth it.

This is why regulated technical fields matter to me specifically.

It's not because they're complicated to build — though they are. It's not because the compliance work is interesting — though sometimes it genuinely is. It's because the students who end up in these programs are often students who needed a real path, not a theoretical one. Students for whom a credential that lasts a lifetime and opens the door to six-figure earning without a four-year degree isn't just an opportunity. It's a trajectory change.

When these programs are built right, that's what happens. When they're not built right... those students still show up. They still invest their time and their money and their belief that the system will deliver what it promised. And if the program fails them, they pay a price they didn't agree to pay.

That's what keeps me focused on getting this right. Not the approval process. Not the compliance framework. Not the paperwork. The student on the other side of all of it, who deserves a program that actually holds up.

Community colleges can change the trajectory of a life. I've seen it. That's the whole reason I do this work.
